Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Vise Keys

Advantages of Using Vise Keys

  • Quick and Repeatable Alignment: Vise Keys enable fast and reliable positioning of the vise parallel to the machine’s axis. Once installed, they make setup easier by eliminating the need for manually tramming the vise, thus saving time and boosting productivity.

Disadvantages of Vise Keys

  • Dependency on Conditions: The accuracy of Vise Keys depends on the condition of the keys, the milling machine and the T-slots being used.
  • Potential Accuracy Issues: While vise keys offer convenience, they may not match the precision of manually tramming a vise HOW TO TRAM A VISE ON YOUR MILLING MACHINE. In situations where exact alignment is crucial, taking the time to tram your vise might be worth the effort.

Mounting Procedure

Preparation

Before installing the keys, start by cleaning the machine table and vise thoroughly. Refer to the "How to Mount a Vise on Your Milling Machine" guide, especially steps 1 and 2, to ensure that all surfaces are clean. Proper cleaning is crucial to achieving an accurate alignment.

Key Installation

  • Sine Keys: These keys are straightforward to install and are simply pushed into the holes at the bottom of the vise.
  • Step Keys: These require a tighter fit and are secured with screws to the bottom of the vise. When installing, check that no burrs are raised in the vise’s key slot, as they could interfere with seating and alignment.

Vise Installation

With the keys installed, follow step 3 from the "HOW TO MOUNT A VISE ON YOUR MILLLING MACHINE" guide to secure and align the vise properly. This final alignment step ensures stability and precision in your milling operations.

At Travers Tool Company, we are committed to providing the tools and guidance you need to ensure precise, efficient machining. Whether you're using Sine Keys or Step Keys, proper installation and maintenance are critical to achieving optimal performance in your milling operations.
