How to Use OMEGADRILL to Remove a Broken Tap:

Step #1:

While wearing safety glasses, remove as many chips and broken tap fragments as possible using a scriber, the picks and pin vise supplied with your Omegadrill set, or a blast of compressed air. Aim for as flat a surface as possible for the Omega Drill to drill into.

Using a  Drive Pin Punch to break off high spots:

Using an Air Gun and a Shop Rag to blow the chips out:

Step #2:

Secure the workpiece in a vise or clamp it firmly to the table of a drill press or milling machine. Install the recommended size Omega Drill in the machine’s drill chuck or a collet.

The Omega Drill is in the drill chuck:

Step #3:

Run the machine at 1,200–2,500 RPM. Drill dry or use straight cutting oil—never coolant. Peck drill through the broken tap, clearing chips frequently, and apply light quill feed pressure for efficient tap removal.

Apply Cutting Oil as needed:

Step #4:

Use a  scriber or the supplied picks and pin vise to remove any remaining tap fragments and chips. A high-pressure spray cleaner can also help during the final tap removal process.

Pro-Tips:

  • As always, wear safety glasses, avoid wearing long loose sleeves, and remove rings, watches, or other jewelry.
  • When using compressed air, cover the workpiece and air gun with a rag to catch flying chips.
Both the workpiece and the Omega Drill must be rigidly secured in the machine. Never attempt this with a hand drill.
