When precision and repeatability matter in your shop, a 5C collet indexing fixture is an essential workholding tool. Ideal for milling, drilling, grinding, or inspection setups, this fixture allows machinists to quickly and accurately index workpieces at specific angles. Whether you’re machining flats on a shaft or drilling holes evenly around a part, the 5C collet indexer delivers the accuracy and efficiency you need.

What Is a 5C Collet Indexing Fixture? Indexing Collet Fixtures

A 5C collet indexing fixture (also known as a 5C spin indexer or collet indexer) securely holds round, hex, or square stock using standard 5C collets. It allows the operator to index or rotate the part to precise positions in 1° increments.

This tool is a shop favorite because it combines accuracy, versatility, and speed—all while using the same 5C collets already common in lathes and collet fixtures and blocks.

Step-by-Step: How to Use a 5C Collet Indexing Fixture

1. Select the Correct 5C Collet 5C Collets

Start by choosing a 5C collet that matches your workpiece diameter. The fit should be snug but not forced, ensuring maximum grip without distortion. Travers Tool Co. offers a full range of hard and emergency 5C collets for every application.

2. Insert the Workpiece

Slide the workpiece into the collet and tighten it using the collet drawbar (some have a closing lever) until the part is secure. Check for proper placement—the workpiece should extend only as far as necessary to maintain rigidity and accuracy.

3. Mount the Fixture

Secure the indexing fixture to your milling machine table, surface grinder, or drill press using T-slot clamps or a machine vise. Make sure it’s aligned square to the machine’s axis—using an indicator to verify accuracy if needed. To learn more, refer to How to Read a Dial Indicator.

4. Set the Index Position

Use the index pin and index plate to position your part in any of the 360 available locations.

  • Rotate the spindle to the desired 10° increment using the 36-hole plate. 5C indexing fixture with spindle lock engaged during machining.
  • Use the frame’s ten divisions to fine-tune your position in 1° steps when needed.
  • Lock the spindle once you’ve set the correct position.

5. Lock the Fixture Spindle

Once indexed, lock the spindle to prevent rotation and perform your machining operation—such as milling a flat, drilling, or grinding. After completing each operation, release the lock, index to the next position, and lock it again.

Applications for a 5C Collet Indexing Fixture

A 5C collet indexing fixture is a versatile tool that can handle a wide range of precision machining and inspection tasks. On round, hexagonal, or square parts, you can:

  • Machine flats, keyways, or other light milling operations
  • Drill equally spaced holes around a workpiece
  • Grind multiple surfaces with consistent spacing
  • Perform inspection setups for checking part geometry or alignment

Because it can hold different shapes securely and index them accurately in 1° increments, the 5C collet indexer is a go-to tool for both production and prototype work—delivering precise, repeatable results every time.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always clean the collet and workpiece for optimal alignment and grip.
  • Use a 5C collet stop to maintain consistent part length.
  • Lubricate the drawbar threads for smoother operation.
